Touch a dragon for good luck…. Be out on Hodges Street on December 31 to ring in 2018 at the running of the Oriental New Years’ Eve Dragon. There are two runnings – both starting and finishing at Hodges and South Water. The first run starts at 8p, the second around 11:30p and in recent years the late run has had not one but two dragons as the Chinese dragon joins in. Bring pots, bring pans, and make your own music for the dragon
The second weekend in December is when Oriental celebrates Spirit of Christmas. In 2017 it’ll be on Friday and Saturday, December 8-9.
The Spirit of Christmas in Oriental is a holiday gift to the people of Oriental from the town merchants, churches and civic groups. For well over a decade, rain or shine, the second weekend in December the town is resplendent in holiday finery. Businesses and churches open their doors for musical offerings and yuletide refreshments, and everyone is invited to stroll the luminary-lined village streets. Festivities actually start with volunteers gathering to put luminaries together on Friday, and everyone is in the spirit by afternoon. The pace is a leisurely stroll with stops everywhere for conversation and holiday greetings, continuing throughout the evening. Townsfolk and visitors are entertained by local choral groups, single and ensemble musicians, Christmas puppets, decorated boats lining Oriental harbor, a Christmas parade and the ceremonious illumination of the Tree of Lights. This beautiful, free event is the work of nearly everyone in Oriental and is guaranteed to put attendees in a holiday mood.
Croakerfest happens on the weekend of the first Saturday in July. July 1 is the first Saturday in July 2017. The yearly festival kicks off the Friday afternoon before with performances by the Pamlico Community Band and the Pamlico Chorale, Miss Croaker and Miss Minnow Pageants, baking contests and a street dance at Freemason and South. Saturday features the Croaker Parade, Croaker Regatta, and amusements for children as well as food and artisans’ booths. All of it is then capped with an outsized fireworks display.
The 2017 Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival on Friday and Saturday October 6 and 7 will once again bring musicians to town and turn Oriental’s porches in to stages.
